There’s a raging war going on between Android and iOs since their launch. Both operating systems were originally designed for mobile phones but now have extended their reach to other devices like tablets, ipods and Tv. Both were launched around 2007 but Android devices came in the user hands during late 2008.
Right in the start of this article I should tell you that there’s no single answer to the question “Which is better, Android or iOs? “. To me it all boils down to the personal preferences. I’m gonna tell you about pros and cons of both the operating systems and then at the end you can decide for yourselves.
As we know that iOs was launched under the supervision of Steve Jobs, which was a bit of a control freak( Sorry Apple fans but its true). Apple has always kept full control over both the hardware and software of their devices. Apple doesn’t let other manufacturers to use their operating system or their hardware. One can say that it’s a good thing in a sense that by doing this Apple can ensure that their hardware is fully utilized by the software. But on the other hand it’s bit of a pain in the ass in a sense that there’s not much users can tweak arround or customize , if they wanted to do so. In the beginning they had plans that all of the apps would be Apple developed but later they realized that it’s a big market they would be missing if they did so. So they launched a development kit for the developers which allowed developers to build apps and then sell them through Apple store.
One can say that iOs have revolutionized the smart phone market since the launch of iPhone. iOs has practically no lag and in the recent versions it handles the multitasking issue pretty amazingly. The home screen icons are pretty well organized and can be changed a little to ones liking. Apple store allows users to install a wide variety of apps. Of course the good ones are usually paid apps. One can not install any apps other than the ones available on the Apple store. But the geniuses out there have found a way and its called Jail Breaking. Although this may cause a void warranty depending upon the method used .
Now coming to the Android. Android was originally developed by Android inc but like all other good things, Google bought it. Its an open source operating system but that doesn't mean its free. Google receives a healthy amount for every device they licence for Android. Android allows users a fair bit of control over the operating system. Users can tweak around and make changes fairly easily if one is interested. Android has a greater market share if we talk about smartphones. Android have also launched a development kit which allows developers to build apps, which are available to the users via Play Store. Android also allows users to install non-market apps without any tweaking in the OS.
In the recent versions ,Android have handled the lag problem and now it gives its users a totally smooth experience. It also allows a good multitasking experience. The problem with the Android is that because the hardware and software comes from two different sources so most of the time one has to catch on to the other. One can buy hardware with quad core processors but there is very little software that takes advantage of that. So it takes a bit of time to adjust with the evolving technology.
At the end I would again like to say that it boils down to personal preferences. Both are good operating systems. But I would like to give credit to Android for making smartphone market accessible to the masses.
